Geometry Filters (Scope Box & SolidFilter)
The Geometry Filter spatially restricts the element set of a rule. Only elements that are inside or intersecting the filter area will be processed.
Filter Types
Scope Box (Revit Standard)
Scope Boxes are rectangular volumes defined in Revit. All Scope Boxes in the project automatically appear in the Geometry Filter dropdown of a rule.
SolidFilter (b.i.m.m Extension)
SolidFilters allow more complex geometric filter shapes – e.g. based on room contours or arbitrary volumes. They are defined in the separate b.i.m.m SolidFilterTool and stored in the Revit document. Rooms and Parts are handled separately when using a SolidFilter to ensure correct filtering.
Geometry Filter Mode
| Mode | Condition | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Inside | The element's Bounding Box must be fully within the filter area | Furniture, fixtures clearly assigned to one area |
| Intersects | It is sufficient if the element touches or intersects the filter area | Walls, columns, slabs that cross area boundaries |
Tip: For walls that often extend beyond a Scope Box boundary,
use Intersects. For clearly bounded elements like furniture,
Inside is more precise.
Special Categories and Geometry Filters
| Category | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Views | Geometry filter is ignored |
| View Templates | Geometry filter is ignored |
| Stair Runs | Geometry filter is ignored |
| Stair Landings | Geometry filter is ignored |
Important when loading Shortcuts: If a rule references a
Geometry Filter not present in the current project, the error
"Scope Box not found (Row X)" appears. The rule is loaded without
a filter – which may produce unintended results. Always verify the filter
manually in this case.
